A Paragon of Incorruptibility,

Virtue and Filial Piety

Huang Xiang (circa 68 AD – 122 AD), courtesy name Wenqiang, was from Anlu, Jiangxia, in the Eastern Han Dynasty. He practiced “the way of filial piety,” “the way of loyalty,” and “the way of the heart,” leaving a significant and celebrated mark in history, becoming a much-told and highly-praised figure among the Chinese people for thousands of years.

At home, he was a pure and filial son. Huang Xiang’s mother passed away when he was young. He missed her so much that even though he was in poor health, he never stopped performing the mourning rites. After that, Huang Xiang became even more filial to his father. He not only took care of the farm work and managed the household chores but also fanned the bed pillow to cool it down in summer. In winter, he would warm the bedding with his own body before letting his father sleep peacefully.

At court, he was a responsible official who cared about public affairs as much as his own family. In the second year of Zhanghe, Emperor Zhang passed away. Huang Xiang became even more respectful, cautious, and diligent in handling government affairs. He often slept alone in the Shangshutai (Imperial Secretariat), never leaving the gate of the secretariat day and night.

In the fourth year of Yongyuan, Huang Xiang was promoted to the Left Assistant Minister of Shangshu, responsible for handling crucial state secrets. He became even more loyal and dedicated. During this period, he often expounded on the gains and losses of government affairs and recommended talents to the imperial court on many occasions, winning rewards from the emperor.

In handling government affairs, he was an upright and honest official who cared about the people. In the first year of Yanguang, Huang Xiang was transferred to serve as the Prefect of Wei Prefecture. Regarding the behavior of previous officials who had taken the profits from the inner fields for their own use, Huang Xiang said, “Noblemen and officials should not compete with the common people for profits.” Thus, he handed over all the fields to the farmers to cultivate. In the lean years due to floods, Huang Xiang distributed his salary and rewards to the poor to help them get through difficult times.
