Admonitions as Mirrors:
The Integrity of Wei Zheng
Wei Zheng was an outstanding politician and a famous prime minister of the Tang Dynasty, known for his forthrightness and frugality. He advocated ideas such as "Impose light taxation and levies," "Be vigilant in times of peace," and "Listen to both sides to be enlightened, listen to one side to be blind," which earned him widespread admiration. Even when Wei Zheng was critically ill, his home remained modest and lacked decent housing. His wife, Pei, was equally known for her integrity and simplicity, earning a reputation as a virtuous woman in history. When Emperor Taizong of Tang offered to renovate Wei Zheng's house, Pei politely declined, citing Wei Zheng's preference for a simple life. After Wei Zheng's death, Taizong planned a grand funeral, but Pei requested a simple ceremony, once again citing Wei Zheng's lifelong frugality.
He advised Emperor Taizong of Tang with sayings such as "To listen to both sides is to be enlightened; to believe only one side is to be in the dark," "Water can carry a boat, but it can also capsize it," "When living in peace, think of danger; when indulging in luxury, practice thrift," "Appoint the wise and accept advice," and "Impose light taxes and levies." Emperor Taizong praised him as a mirror through which one could discern both gains and losses: "Using a copper mirror can I put my dress right, using the mirror of history I can see the direction and reflect on my rulings, while using a gentleman as a mirror I can correct my own flaws. Now that Wei Zheng passed away, I’ve lost one mirror!"
Wei Zheng's image of integrity has been deeply rooted in people's hearts for thousands of years.
